Mineral Cosmetics
What Are Mineral Cosmetics?
As the name suggests, mineral cosmetics are made from a mineral base, rather than a vegetable base. Minerals, such as mica, are
micro-pulverized to form microscopic flat crystals.
These crystals overlap each other on the skin to form a filter that allows the skin to breathe and function normally, while still protecting
it from air-borne pollutants, all while serving as a make-up.
The idea of mineral-based cosmetics is not a new one. Ancient Egyptians basically invented modern cosmetics 4500 years ago. While examining
samples of the ancient cosmetics, researchers discovered both mineral and vegetable ingredients. Some of the minerals were common, but a surprise
came when the relatively rare minerals laurionite and phosgenite where identified. These minerals were being produced artificially, demonstrating
an incredible knowledge of both chemistry and cosmetics.
Why Use Mineral Based Cosmetics?
There are many reasons why a person may wish to use mineral cosmetics:
- Mineral cosmetics are non-camedogenic, meaning they will not clog pores.
- Mineral cosmetics are inert, so there is virtually no allergy risk.
- Mineral cosmetics have a naturally high SPF 20 rating, for sun protection.
- Mineral cosmetics have anti-inflammatory properties, thus soothing irated and sensitive skin.
- Mineral cosmetics have extremely good staying power and are water-resistant. Rarely will you need to touch up during the day.
- Due to the layering effect of the minerals, the cosmetics cover very well and evenly, making them an excellent choice for those with
acne.
- Since mineral cosmetics are water resistant, they will not streak or run even when exercising.
- Mineral cosmetics are inert, so bacteria can not grow in the jar.
Are Mineral Cosmetics Applied Differently Than Normal Cosmetics?
The goal of the application of make-up is the same, but mineral-based cosmetics are applied in a slightly different way. Since they are pure
and cover exceptionally well, you use a lot less make-up.
To get even foundation coverage, start with a skin moisturizer and allow it to completely absorb before applying foundation. With mineral
foundations, you want to apply very light layers. You can always add more, but can not strip off or blend in too much foundation.
Mineral eye shadows can be applied dry or wet. For a soft airbrushed look, apply eye shadow with a dry brush. For more active occasions, such
as a wedding, apply your eye shadow with a moistened brush. The wet application is bolder and tear proof.
Last, but not least, ensure you have good quality brushes. As with so many other things, good quality tools make all the difference. Cosmetic
application becomes much faster and easier with good brushes.
Are Mineral Cosmetics More Expensive?
This is a very good question and a difficult one to answer. Due to competitive pressures, cosmetics companies tend to be fairly quiet about
exactly what is in their products. Prices are just as hard to compare, as the quality of products can vary greatly between companies.
My research indicates that most, if not all, companies have mineral based cosmetics. These will often be advertised as allergen free,
lightweight, gliding, long lasting, or water proof. If you are unsure, ask the cosmetics specialist before you buy.
